From a mat to a machine

1

Measure the room

Everyone needs to pull a chair back. Allow a clear walkway around a table about 3 feet square.

2

Start with a mat

A padded mat on any sturdy square table gets you playing tonight. It quiets the clatter and keeps tiles from scratching wood.

3

Go automatic for weekly games

An automatic table shuffles the tiles and raises the walls for you. It is heavy, needs power and only takes its own tiles.

Four chairs, four walls of tiles, one long evening.

Before you buy a table

选A flat, stiff top that does not wobble when tiles are pushed.
选A raised rim on the table or mat, so tiles stay put.
选Side drawers or holders for chips and drinks.
选On automatic tables, a US-voltage model and a spare tile set.

Many Chinese automatic tables run on 220V, not US 110 to 120V. Confirm voltage before ordering. These tables ship as heavy freight, so check delivery too.

Good to know

What size is a mahjong table?

Most are square and about 34 to 36 inches a side. That fits four walls of tiles with room for discards in the center. American players also need space for racks.

How does an automatic mahjong table work?

You push used tiles into a slot in the center. Magnets inside the tiles let the machine turn and shuffle them, then stacked walls rise back up.

Can I use a regular table for mahjong?

Yes. Any sturdy square table works. A folding card table with a mat is how many home games begin.
