What each shape wishes for

1

Peace buckle

A round disc with a hole, called ping'an kou. People wear it as a wish for safety. The form echoes the ancient jade bi disc.

2

Guanyin and Budai

A saying goes: men wear Guanyin, women wear smiling Budai, the monk also called the Laughing Buddha. Both are sacred to many wearers, so handle them with respect.

3

Wushi plaque

A plain rectangle with nothing carved. Wushi means nothing going wrong, and the blank face leaves the stone's quality in full view.

Heavy carving can hide a crack. Plain stone cannot.

What to look for

选Shine a light through it. Heavy carving can hide cracks, so check inside the cuts.
选A clean drill hole with no chips, and a bail that does not cover damage.
选A lab report stating Grade A for costly jadeite.
选A sliding knot on the cord. Replace the cord as soon as it frays.

Good to know

What does a jade pendant mean?

It depends on the shape. A peace buckle stands for safety, a leaf for career, a gourd for blessings and Guanyin for compassion. These are traditional meanings rather than promises.

Can non-Buddhists wear a Guanyin or Buddha pendant?

Yes, and many do. Women wear Guanyin too: the men-Guanyin, women-Buddha saying is custom rather than a rule. Treat the figure with respect and choose one that means something to you.

Should I take off my jade necklace to shower?

Yes, it is safer to. Water will not hurt real jade, but soap dulls it, wet cords wear out and a slippery clasp can fail.
