Pit After Pit

kǎn · Water over Water

In repeated hardship, keep your heart steady and keep moving.

The judgment

Danger comes twice, pit after pit, water flowing on. Hold to good faith, and your heart can stay clear. Keep moving as water does, and your actions earn respect.

The six lines

Line 1 · Yin

You have grown used to danger and slipped into the deepest hole. This is a dangerous place, and it is easy to lose the way.

Line 2 · Yang

You are in the pit, and the danger is real. Do not aim for everything; seek small gains.

Line 3 · Yin

Pits ahead and behind you, and danger under your head. Do not act; any move goes deeper.

Line 4 · Yin

Wine in a jar, grain in a side dish, rough clay slipped in by the window. Honest plainness reaches through, ending without fault.

Line 5 · Yang

The pit is not yet full, but the water has nearly reached level. Do no more than that, and there is no fault.

Line 6 · Yin

You are bound with ropes and set among thorn bushes. For three years the way out is lost. This is a hard and dangerous place.

The I Ching is a tool for reflection. Do not use it as the basis for medical, legal or money decisions.
