How to raise a tea pet

1

Pour tea over it

Give it your rinse water or the last of the pot. Tea takes best while the clay is warm.

2

Brush it while wet

A soft tea brush spreads the tea evenly and stops streaks. Over months the surface grows a soft shine.

3

Let it dry out

Rinse it with hot water now and then, with no soap, and let it air dry. Old tea left standing grows mold.

Share your tea, and the clay starts to glow.

What to look for

选Choose bare clay. A glazed figure will never take on a patina.
选Know that color-changing pets use a heat-sensitive coating. Fun, but it is no patina.
选Look at the eyes, feet and hollows. Clean modeling shows care.
选Pick an animal you like. It will sit in front of you every day.

Good to know

What is a tea pet?

A tea pet is a small clay figure kept on a tea tray. Drinkers pour spare tea over it, and the clay slowly darkens and shines.

Do tea pets bring good luck?

Traditionally they stand for good fortune, but nothing is promised. A three-legged toad stands for wealth, and people pick the animal whose meaning they like.

How does a pee pee boy tea pet work?

The hollow figure has a tiny hole. Warm it with hot water, then dunk it in cool water so it draws water in. Pour hot water over its head and the warmed air pushes out a jet.
