Three ways to wear it

1

Morning robe

Throw it over sleep clothes for coffee, tea and the first hour of the day.

2

Open layer

Wear it untied over a tank and wide-leg pants. It works as a light duster on warm evenings.

3

Crossed the old way

Lay left panel over right, so the neck forms a lowercase y. In old ritual texts the reverse is for dressing the dead.

Left over right. That small rule is very old.

Picking the cloth and cut

选Washed linen is soft from day one. Raw linen takes several washes.
选Heavier cloth hangs better on a long robe. Lighter cloth runs cooler.
选Check the sash length and the loops that hold it.
选Test the sleeves. Very wide ones dip in the sink and can catch a stove flame.

Good to know

Is a Chinese robe the same as a kimono?

No. Both wrap left over right, and kimono took early influence from Tang dress. Kimono use straight panels and an obi. Chinese house robes are looser, with a soft tie.

Linen robe or silk robe?

Choose linen for heat and easy washing. Choose silk for a smooth feel against the skin and a dressier look.

Can you wear a linen robe outside?

Yes. Wear it open over simple clothes, like a long cardigan. Choose a solid color and a mid-weight cloth so it looks like a jacket.
