How to live in one

1

Start plain

Many women students in 1930s cities wore plain blue cotton qipao. One solid color is the true everyday look.

2

Layer it

Add flat shoes, and a cardigan on cool days. Women in Republican-era photos did the same.

3

Wash it gently

Fasten the frogs, turn it inside out and use a mesh bag. Press the collar from the inside while damp.

Blue cotton, flat shoes, a book under one arm.

Choosing a cloth one

选Allow more ease than in silk. Woven cotton has no give.
选Look for pre-washed cloth, so the first wash won't shrink the fit.
选Press the collar with your thumb. It should spring back, not stay bent.
选Choose a cotton-linen blend if you want fewer wrinkles.

Good to know

Can you machine wash a cotton qipao?

Usually yes, on a cold, gentle cycle in a mesh bag. Check the care label first, and hang it to dry. Hand washing is kinder to the collar.

Is a linen qipao casual?

Yes. Cotton and linen are daywear, good for lunch, tea or the office. For banquets, choose silk or brocade.

What do you wear under a qipao?

Seamless underwear, plus a slip if the cloth is pale or thin. Dark or heavier cotton is fine with no slip.
