Hexagram 44
姤

Sudden Encounter

gòu · Heaven over Wind

Notice what just walked in before you commit to it.

The judgment

A strong force appears suddenly, pictured here as a bold woman one should not hastily marry. Something small yet powerful has entered. Be careful about binding yourself to it too quickly.

The six lines

Line 1 · Yin

Tie it to a bronze brake and hold it fast. Let it loose and trouble shows up: a lean pig, restless and pacing, waiting to run.

Line 2 · Yang

There is a fish in your wrapper. Hold it and you do no harm, but do not serve it to guests. Keep this contained.

Line 3 · Yang

Your seat is raw and your steps falter. It is uncomfortable and risky, yet holding back spares you from serious mistakes.

Line 4 · Yang

The wrapper is empty and the fish is gone. You have lost touch with ordinary people. Rising in anger now would only make trouble.

Line 5 · Yang

Leafy boughs of a tall tree wrap a ripening melon. Hold your brilliance inside, and what is meant for you may fall as if from heaven.

Line 6 · Yang

You meet on the horns, proud and isolated. It is a lonely and awkward spot, though no real blame falls on you.

The I Ching is a tool for reflection. Do not use it as the basis for medical, legal or money decisions.
